Practical Wakizashi

Paul Chen Hanwei - SH2061

A wakizashi is a samurai's short sword. In some situations a katana would be too long, such as while indoors, when the samurai would generally remove their katana. Some believe the traditional ninja sword was basically a wakizashi, rather than the modern ninja sword commonly known today. The blade of this Wakizashi is hand forged high carbon steel and differentially tempered using a traditional claying method, producing an HRC60 on the edge (ha) and HRC40 on the back (mune) with a medium (chu) kissaki. The temper line (hamon) is authentic and prominent. The fittings (koshirae) are antiqued adding to the aesthetics of the set. The saya is done in a deep black lacquer and the sageo is black Japanese cotton. The tsuka-ito is wrapped with synthetic leather giving great gripping characteristics. Imitation ray skin (same) is used. Cost savings are affected by using fittings, which, while making no claims to authenticity, are very strongly built to withstand the rigors of cutting exercises (tameshigiri).Measurements:Overall Length: 27"Blade: 20"Handle: 6"Thickness: 0.24"Weight: 1lb 8oz
